Creating Rituals for Grounding: Finding Calm in the Everyday
Week 48, 2024
🌟 Season's Greetings!
Here we are, December again—it seems to come around quicker every year. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older or just having fewer new experiences, but it always feels like it sneaks up on me. This time of year is so busy, and it can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why I wanted to share a bit about how simple rituals can help bring a sense of calm and grounding, especially when everything feels a bit unsteady.
When I say "ritual," I’m not talking about anything elaborate or tied to specific traditions (though it could be, if that resonates with you). I’m referring to small, intentional practices that create stability—something familiar to hold onto amidst the chaos of life. It’s not about perfection but about finding moments to pause, breathe, and just be.
⚓ Rituals as Anchors
For me, rituals are like anchors. They help me stay grounded without trying to fix or change anything. The other day, I found myself overwhelmed by my to-do list. My mind was racing and felt all over the place. So, I paused, made myself a cup of herbal tea (trying to stay off the caffeine), and sat by the window where the sunlight was warming my face. I didn’t try to fix anything or make the overwhelm disappear—I just let myself be in that moment. That small act became a grounding ritual for me, a way to find calm in the midst of my storm.
💡 The Power of Intentionality
What I love about rituals is how personal they can be. They can be as small and as simple as lighting a candle at the end of the day or pausing to enjoy a cup of tea without distraction. The key is intentionality—how we show up for these moments. It’s not just about the act itself but the care and presence we bring to it. For me, at the end of each working day, after eating, I head straight for the shower. It’s a reset—a way to transition from work time to personal time. Afterward, I cleanse, tone, and moisturise my face, plus moisturise my hands and body. I then sit in a quiet spot, light a candle, and spend a few moments meditating on my day, letting go of anything that affected me negatively. This ritual helps me cleanse my day and gives me space to reset.
🌿 Grounding in Everyday Life
I know it can be easy to think that relaxation or stress management practices are nice but not very practical, especially when life is busy. I get it—sometimes the idea of adding "one more thing" can feel overwhelming. But grounding rituals don’t need to take extra time. They can be woven into your day, like savouring the first sip of coffee in the morning or taking a deep breath before you step out of your car. These moments are already happening—it’s just about being present and giving yourself permission to slow down and appreciate them.
💆♀️ Practical Exercise: A Simple Pause
Here’s a grounding exercise for when you’re feeling overwhelmed or disconnected. It doesn’t take much time, but it can help you reconnect with the present moment.
Pause and Breathe Exercise
Pause: Find a moment to stop, even for just a minute. This could be while waiting for your coffee to brew, sitting at your desk, or taking a break from a task.
Breathe: Take a deep breath in, slowly filling your lungs, and then exhale fully, releasing any tension. Do this for 3-5 breaths, focusing on the sensation of your breath entering and leaving your body.
Notice: As you breathe, bring your awareness to your surroundings. Notice one thing you can see, hear, and feel—perhaps the warmth of sunlight on your skin or the feeling of your feet on the ground.
Anchor: With each breath, imagine yourself becoming more rooted, like the roots of a tree stretching deep into the earth. Let your body feel supported by the ground beneath you.
This exercise doesn’t take much time but can help you reconnect with your body and the present moment.
🌅 Finding Your Glimmer
This week, my glimmer was hearing geese migrating as they flew past my door. Genuinely, this happened on two occasions and was awesome to hear, in the true sense of the word. That moment reminded me of the beauty and rhythm of nature—how life moves in cycles, and we’re all part of something bigger. What’s been your glimmer this week?
🫶 A Gentle Invitation
Healing isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing up for yourself in small, meaningful ways. You’re doing enough, just as you are.
✍️ What small rituals or moments in your day help you feel grounded? How can you intentionally create more space for them?
Affirm:
“I honour the small, grounding moments in my day. They are gifts to myself, reminders of my strength, and anchors in my journey.”
This week, I invite you to notice moments in your day that feel grounding. Maybe it’s the stillness of early morning, the rhythm of a favourite song, or the warmth of water during a shower. You don’t have to create new rituals—sometimes, it’s simply about noticing the ones that are already there.
With Gratitude,
Dana xo.

P.S. I love the heart shaped puddle! This year I've noticed a few heart shapes in nature. Always brings a smile to my soul.
“I honour the small, grounding moments in my day. They are gifts to myself, reminders of my strength, and anchors in my journey.”
Love that. Lighting a candle, a nice coffee, morning meditation. To start the day with intention and gratitude.
Lovely post 🙏🥰
